One Bedroom Villa with Private Pool is perfect for a couple seeking a cozy get-away with unique Santorini style with a twist and all the comforts of home.  Additional Information Stone House, named for the exterior walls that are covered in local volcanic stone, once was a winery and cellar (or “canava”) for producing Vinsanto at the turn of the century. Vinsanto is a sweet desert wine, which originated in Santorini, and is still produced here for export around the world. At the turn of the century, Vinsanto production was among the island’s most lucrative industries. Most of the product was exported at that time to Russia, for use by the Russian Orthodox Church during the Holy Communion ritual. It is quite literally named after this use: “Vin” for wine and “santo” for saint, in the Italian language used by the Venetian shipping merchants who also played a prominent role in Santorini history. The Russian demand for Vinsanto came to an end with the Russian Revolution, having a major impact on the scale of this industry in Santorini.  The original structure has been sensitively renovated, preserving original elements as creative design features, relics of the building’s important role in Santorini history. The sunken cylindrical troughs visible on the floor, which now act as unusual lighting features, were actually once used for distilling the Vinsanto after the grapes were pressed. The beautiful organic shape and proportions of the smooth walls, vaulted ceilings and arched openings tell the story of the canava and how it was constructed by carving into the soft pumice stone of the village hills.

Villa Io

Room Details

This peaceful family hideaway is tucked away in a secluded alcove along a winding footpath, lined with white walls and cascading fuschia flowers, leading from the Megalochori village square. This Villa is just a two minute walk from the village square and a million miles from your cares.   A stroll through the picturesque village reveals a few famous restaurants nestled beneath pretty Venetian church bell towers.  This once upon a time village school house is loaded with character. Delightful old world antiques and artsy hand crafted light fixtures mingle with traditional vaulted ceilings and arched passageways in this uniquely renovated home. The airy white interiors are always cool and comfortable. This is stylish simplicity at its best.  The vibrant red plaster walls of the private cobbled courtyard are dazzling; the perfect complement for the sparkling blue pool. Soak in the sun at the pool or wait for the dramatic mood lighting of nightfall.   This Villa promises tranquility, privacy and a taste of traditional village life. The villa is ideal for families wanting to experience the authentic Greek island life-style of days gone by without compromising on modern comfort. Additional Information This Villa once served as the village school for the local children of Megalochori.  The old school house has been sensitively renovated, preserving the original organic shape and proportions of the smooth walls, vaulted ceilings and arched openings of the existing building. These elements remind you of how the building was constructed, in the old Santorinian tradition of carving buildings into the soft pumice-stone earth of the village hills. The layout of the house takes its cues from traditional Santorini houses, echoing the shapes and colors of the island’s unique architecture. Another notable feature of the Villa is its natural ambient interior temperature. The natural insulation of the earthen walls of the space regulated the temperature of the school house, keeping the interior warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Today, this natural insulation continues to be an advantage, maintaining a constantly cool interior environment in the villa, even on the hottest summer days.

Private Mansion

Mansion 1878

Room Details

This beautifully restored, traditional two-storey Mansion dating back to 17th Century  offers a luxury escape to those seeking to experience the pace and charm of life on Santorini away from the jostling summer crowds found in  Fira and Oia. The property is two minute stroll from the village square with its few infamous tavernas along a winding road with cream and white washed walls and bright fuschia flowers. Outside guests can enjoy the privacy of the walled courtyard, relax by the swimming pool, soak up the sun on the hammock, or retire upstairs to the roof-top terraces providing diners with panoramic views over the rooftops and views of the vineyards, where wine tasting excursions can be arranged. Inside the smooth curved walls, feature alcoves displaying carefully chosen objects, are brought to life by a blend of intense natural light and mood-lighting. The architect designed minimalist interior décor with fine antique pieces  helps to create a unique atmosphere and living space.  Perhaps it is no coincidence that the property was once owned by one of the most powerful families on the island.  Perfect for large families, wedding parties, a group of friends, or perhaps two families that require independent living space without compromising privacy and comfort.  Additional Information At the turn of the century, the first floor would have been occupied by the family with the ground floor serving as the winery and cellar. The Vinsanto dessert wine produced was exported to Russia, where it was used by the Russian Orthodox Church for Holy Communion. Unfortunately, this all came to an end with the Russian Revolution which had a big impact on the wealth of families in this once flourishing village. The original structure has been sensitively renovated. Restored to its original splendor, retaining the original layout and traditional features, the gracious proportions and weathered building materials speak for themselves! The ground floor once served as the 'canava' - wine cellar and workshop - of the Mansion. The cylindrical troughs sunk into the ground, once used for distilling the Vinsanto, provides unusual lighting features to the interior. Three large barn-style doors lead from the cobbled courtyard into the various living areas. The smooth-edged carved interior provides a cool and relaxing haven during the hot summer days. The well equipped traditional-style central kitchen leads into the beautifully lit dining room, perfect for leisurely meals with friends and family. Arched doorways on either side of the kitchen allows for an easy flow through the house.
